ScotPHO update health comparison database

The Scotland and European Health for All (HfA) Database, published by the Scottish Public Health Observatory, has been updated. The database has been built by adding Scottish data to the WHO's European Health for All Database and is part of ScotPHO aim to show how health in Scotland compares to other countries.


Data are presented in a user-friendly, graphical or tabular form, allowing time trend and
international comparisons for:

- 600 health and health-related indicators, with Scottish data gathered
for 488 of these.

- 1970 to 2005 where available

- Scotland and the 53 Member States of the WHO European Region, including
the UK, plus averages such as the European Union (27 countries).

FIRST eLibrary course

The latest FIRST course offered by the Library Services in NHSGG&C started this week. FIRST stands for Facilitated Information Retrieval Skills Training and this particular course is on the NHS eLibrary. The courses are a mixture of demonstrations and exercises delivered via the web and email which participants work through in their own time over a period of a few weeks. It's too late to enrol in the current course but others will be offered later in the year. The Library Services Training pages give more details of future courses.

Community nursing bulletin May-June 2007

The latest issue of the Maria Henderson Library's current awareness bulletin for nurses working in the community, dated May/June 2007 has been published. The bulletin contains publications and material on addictions, adolescent mental health, cancer, diabetes, ethnic health, health promotion, partnership working, stroke and new resources.

Scottish Schools Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey

ISD has just published the Scottish schools adolescent lifestyle and substance use survey (SALSUS) national report : smoking, drinking and drug use among 13 and 15 year olds in Scotland in 2006. The survey includes information on prevalence, trends and patterns, availability, attitudes and information, and health and lifestyle factors including deprivation. The survey is part of the biennial series of secondary school surveys on smoking, drinking and drug use commissioned by the Scottish Executive.
